Travel Information

Travel to Costa Rica and the Central Pacific Coast can be accomplished by several methods. Once you book a reservation, we will be happy to provide you recommendations for you to consider. There is a myriad of travel books, blogs and websites that discuss travel within Costa Rica.

Arrival

The vast majority of international flights to Costa Rica arrive at the modern Juan Santamaria International Airport in the capitol city of San Jose. Most flights arrive in the evening, making it advisable to spend the night there before heading to the coast the next morning. However, some “red eye” fights arrive in the morning, where it may be possible to catch a regional flight to Palmar Sur or Quepos on the same day. Another way to get to the coast is to hire a tour bus/car and driver, take a public bus or rent a car in San Jose to make your trip to the coast. Arrangements can be made to have a rental car delivered to you on the coast should you decide not to drive yourself. Driving in San Jose can be daunting for the uninitiated and we suggest you hire a taxi while there.

Departure

You should figure on one travel day to get from the Pacific Coast to San Jose. If you are flying from the coast, flights leave mid morning from Palmar Sur. Often, you can arrange with your rental car agency to pick up your rental at the airport. We advise you have a reservation and arrive in plenty of time to check in and turn over your rental car. Most international flights leave San Jose early in the morning. It is advisable to arrive at the airport at least 2 – 2.5 hours before you flight departs. You will need to pay and be processed through immigration before you check in with your airline. There is also a rather slow security process you must go through before getting to your departure gate. CHECK WITH YOUR AIRLINE FOR MORE SPECIFIC DETAILS.

If you are driving from the coast, make sure you allow plenty of time to drive, return your rental car and get to the airport.

It is often worthwhile to spend the night in San Jose at a hotel near the airport the evening before your departure day.
